Strikingly is surprisingly feature-rich for a low-cost website builder. Not only does it have a beginner-friendly site editor, pre-built templates, a free domain name and SSL certificate, but every plan includes the ability to sell online—something that is rarely available with entry-level plans. Its midrange and top-tier plans also include discounts on transaction fees, the ability to sell memberships and more.

Site Editor

From the start, Strikingly’s site editor is very easy to use. While it’s regarded as a drag-and-drop editor, I wouldn’t say it’s a true drag-and-drop editor like Wix or Elementor as you cannot move elements anywhere on the page. Instead, it gives a few layout options to choose from, enabling you to change the layout of text and other elements, such as buttons and icons. While this may sound as though it’s not a good thing, limited design options can be a good thing for web design beginners as it ensures the site’s layout is always professional.

Beyond layouts, I found it to be intuitive when I first started using it. For example, if you want to change any text, you simply click on the text to edit and it does a good job of labeling any elements that are not immediately apparent, such as the “background” button in the upper right-hand corner, which is where you click to change the background. I also appreciate that you can change your template—even after selecting one without losing your changes. This is a unique feature in the website builder world and one that can be very helpful in the long run as you can quickly redesign your site without having to rebuild your entire site like many other site builders.

Online Store

All Strikingly plans are e-commerce-ready with a user-friendly store interface complete with product categories, shipping, taxes and product reviews. Adding a new product is easy, simply denote the product type (physical item, service or digital download) and complete the prompts. Users are also able to create promotions with coupons, sell memberships (available with mid- and top-tier plans), receive email notifications to keep their customers updated on order status, set up abandoned cart recovery and set up their payment gateway of choice (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, Apple Pay).

Templates

Strikingly has a surprisingly impressive template library with a combination of more classic web designs and more modern web designs. Users can filter templates based on use case, such as online store, business website, membership site, blog, landing page, event or personal as well as by industry, such as courses and coaching, restaurant and food, real estate, travel, nonprofit, health and wellness, services, finance, entertainment and more. I find that most of its templates are fairly simple, but for many of them, I find that this also makes them look more professional as homemade and dated templates have a tendency to be more cluttered.

Marketing and SEO Tools

Strikingly has a handful of marketing and SEO tools, though it pales in comparison to many of its top competitors in this area. Users can easily design pop-ups to grab the attention of your visitors and to generate leads, as well as create newsletters. Though what I don’t like about its newsletter feature is that you cannot schedule a newsletter to send at a later date and time. Instead, you have to click, “send now” to send it, so you can’t prepare newsletters in advance and set a time to deploy them.

One thing I do like is its coupons feature, which lets you create coupons based on a percentage, flat discount or free shipping with conditions such as apply to all items, for orders over a certain amount of money, specific products or specific product categories.

Additionally, it has a built-in SEO checklist, but it’s very basic and in my opinion, it’s too simplistic to make much of an impact in terms of organic search.

Strikingly Setup

What’s nice about Strikingly is how easy it is to set up a site. To start, you’ll be prompted to choose a template. From there, you will be redirected to the site editor, which provides you with a walk-through tour of the interface to help new users get acquainted. One thing I don’t like about the setup process is that it’s not evident how to connect a domain. To do so, click the small “exit” button in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen and then click to the right of your automatically assigned subdomain. From there, you can search and buy a domain directly from Strikingly, which is easy, but if you already own a domain, you need to transfer your domain to Strikingly.
